Suicide Prevention Starts With a Conversation

Suicide Prevention Starts With a Conversation

Suicide Prevention Month

You Don't Have to Say the Right Thing. Just Ask.

Every September, Suicide Prevention Month brings a wave of advice: know the warning signs, learn the risk factors, memorize the right script. All useful. But it can also leave people frozen — worried that if they don't say exactly the right words, they'll make things worse. So they say nothing at all.

Here's the angle worth sitting with this year: you don't need the perfect words. You need to actually ask.

The Myth That Keeps Us Silent

One of the most persistent myths about suicide is that asking someone directly if they're thinking about it will "put the idea in their head" or push them closer to the edge. Research consistently shows the opposite — asking does not increase risk, and for many people, being asked is the first time they feel someone actually noticed. Silence isn't protective. It's just quiet.

The real barrier usually isn't a lack of concern. It's fear of getting it wrong, fear of overstepping, fear of an answer we don't know how to handle. So, we default to safer, vaguer questions — "You doing okay?" — and accept "I'm fine" as the end of the conversation, even when something in our gut says otherwise.

What Actually Helps

Directness, delivered with warmth, does more good than any perfectly worded speech:

  • "I've noticed you haven't seemed like yourself lately. Are you having thoughts of suicide?"
  • "I'm not asking to judge you. I'm asking because I want to understand what you're carrying."
  • "You don't have to convince me it's serious enough for us to talk about it."
  • "I don't have all the answers, but I'm not going to disappear after I ask this."

Notice none of these promise a fix. They promise presence — someone willing to stay in an uncomfortable conversation instead of steering around it.

Showing Up Imperfectly Is Still Showing Up

You will probably fumble the conversation at some point. You might ask at the wrong time, freeze after their answer, or not know what to say next. That's normal, and it doesn't undo the value of asking in the first place. What matters most is that someone in pain felt seen, even briefly, by someone who cared enough to risk an awkward moment.

If you're the one struggling this month, know this too: you don't need to have the "right" story or a dramatic enough reason to reach out. Pain doesn't need to be justified to be worth talking about.

If You Need Support Right Now

If you or someone you know is in crisis, you can call or text 988 anytime, day or night, to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline — free, confidential, and available in English and Spanish, with support for Deaf and hard-of-hearing callers (SAMHSA). Veterans can press 1 after dialing 988 to connect directly with the Veterans Crisis Line (FCC).

This Suicide Prevention Month, skip the search for the perfect sentence. Just ask the real question, and stay in the room for whatever answer comes back.
