Peace Is Important for Your Well-Being

by Dr. Sue May on Sep 23, 2026
Choose peace every day

Life can be loud.

The phone is ringing.  Work is demanding and your family needs your attention. These days, the news can feel heavy, in a world that constantly asks us to move faster and do more. Sometimes our own thoughts are the loudest things in the room. Peace can start to feel like a luxury instead of a necessity.

In the middle of all that noise, peace matters.

Peace does not mean that everything in life is perfect. It does not mean avoiding difficult conversations, ignoring problems, or pretending everything is okay.

Peace is creating moments when your body and mind have permission to slow down, recover, and simply be. Peace is an intentional practice-not something you wait to “find” but something you actively choose and protect in your daily life.

When we feel stressed, our bodies respond. Our muscles may become tense, our breathing may change, and it may become harder to relax or sleep.

Stress is a normal part of life. But living in a constant state of tension can leave us feeling physically and emotionally exhausted.

That is why creating moments of calm is important.

And peace does not have to mean an expensive vacation, a spa day, or sitting on a beach somewhere—although nobody is turning down a spa day or a trip to the beach!

Peace can be surprisingly simple.

It can be prayer before starting your day.

It can be sitting quietly with a cup of tea.

It can be reading something encouraging.

It can be listening to music.

It can be laughing with someone you love.

Sometimes peace is simply putting the phone on Do Not Disturb and meaning it.

Two Simple Ways to Create Peace Every Day

  1. Give Yourself 10 Quiet Minutes

Set aside 10 minutes each day without social media, television, email, or unnecessary distractions.

Use that time to pray, meditate, breathe slowly, journal, stretch, read, or simply sit quietly.

Ten minutes may not change everything happening around you, but those minutes can change how you respond to what happens next.

     2. Spend a Few Minutes with Nature

Take a comfortable walk, sit outside, or spend a few quiet moments near a window.

Notice the sky. Feel the breeze or warmth of the sun. Listen to the sounds around you. If walking is not comfortable or accessible for you, peace does not require it.

Take 2-Minute Breathing Reset

  • Sit comfortably and enjoy the moment in whatever way works for your body.

  • Inhale slowly through your nose for a count of 4.

  • Hold gently for a count of 2.

  • Exhale through your mouth for a count of 6.

  • Repeat for 2-3 minutes.

This simple reset pattern signals your nervous system to calm down, reduces tension, and brings you back into your body.

The goal isn’t exercise, it’s being present.

Protect the Peace You Create

Creating peace is one thing. Protecting it is another.

Pay attention to what repeatedly disrupts your well-being.

Not every phone call requires an immediate response.

Not every social media post deserves your attention.

Not every disagreement requires your participation.

And not every invitation requires a yes.

Creating healthy limits does not mean that you stop caring about people. Healthy limits can allow you to care for others while also recognizing that your well-being matters.

Be Mindful of What You Feed Your Mind

We think about what we put into our bodies, but what about what we put into our minds?

Constant exposure to arguments, upsetting news, social media conflict, and comparison can become exhausting.

Give your mind something different.

Try music. Prayer. Reading. Creativity. Nature. Laughter. Gratitude. Conversation. Silence.

Your mind deserves moments when it is not being asked to process the entire world.

Make Peace Part of Your Lifestyle

A peaceful lifestyle does not require a peaceful world.

It begins with small, intentional choices.

Before starting your day, ask yourself:

What deserves my energy today?

What can I release today?

How can I bring a little peace to someone else’s day?

We cannot control everything happening around us, but we can become more intentional about what we allow to live within us.

Choose calm when you can.

Choose kindness when you can.

Rest when you need it.

Listen to your body

Honor your limits

Give compassion to others and remember to save some for yourself.

Because sometimes one of the most powerful things we can do for our health is simply create a little room for peace. When you Push Peace, you’re not ignoring the hard things- you’re deciding to meet them with a clearer mind, a grounded body, and heart that knows it deserves rest.
